the video was recorded November 26-30, 1991 and the CD was recorded November 29,
1991, so it would appear that the video at least partially duplicates the
performance on the CD, assuming information for both is accurate. I think it's
unlikely that Sony depended on the in-house equipment that the MPO seems to have
had running around the clock.
On the whole (I don't have the Bruckner set yet), I have found the EMI
releases--as well as a couple of pirates--more successful in conveying at least an
inkling of the feel of a Celi performance. The Sony is a bit too closely miked and
you hear the sound coming straight from the instruments, with no chance to occupy
space. The EMI is a bit more distant, providing somewhat less ooommph but a good
deal more atmosphere.
As far as timings go, those printed on the packaging could vary widely even if the
performances were the same, owing to the extraordinary amount of time between
movements and applause, etc, which may or may not be accounted for, and may be
trimmed differently in each release.
