Celi's "Nutcracker"

My latest addition to my Celi CD collection is a recording made with the
RTSI ( Radio Televisione della Svizzera Italiana - sp? ) Orchestra on
the ERMITAGE label. These are recordings made on 14 June 1963 of a
concert in Lugano and as far as I know ERMITAGE had access to the
original tapes; indeed the sound is just a notch below CETRA quality. I
would have to say that I'm not the best judge about sound transfer, so I
will stop here. But what's important is the performance, and for the
Suite of Nutcracker is by far the best that I have heard, at least IMO.
The performance manages to keep the balletic quality of the work, and
somehow transcending it to something higher; I really don't have the
words for it. I'm simply astounded!

An amazing thing about Celi is how he evolved from his BPO years to his
late time in the career. To just talk about the tempi, here they are
faster than what Celi may have used later; indeed, there are a lot of
other slower versions by different conductors. In this aspect Celi and
Bernstein are alike.

The other work on the disc is Schubert's "Unfinished Symphony" and
Celi's genius also shines here. The orchestra is not in the class of
the MPO but better than the RAI Orchestra with which Celi used to work.
The source for this recording is again Berkshire Record Outlet (
http://www.berkshirerecoutlet.com/ ). From what I understand ERMITAGE
is a defunct label - can somebody please confirm? - so Berkshire may be
your only source.

As usual, any other thoughts on this performance are welcome.

George
